The Tremiti islands
They are in Puglia, but you go from Termoli: fifty minutes and you are in a different sea.
The Tremiti are five islands off the Gargano and belong to the province of Foggia, and therefore to Puglia: they are not Molise. They are covered here because the port nearly everyone leaves from is Termoli, and because for anyone camping on the Molise coast they are the sea trip of the holiday.
San Domino is the largest and is covered in Aleppo pines; it has the coves, the paths and nearly all the beds. San Nicola is the smallest and the most built up: it holds the fortified abbey of Santa Maria a Mare, founded in the eleventh century, and walls that drop sheer. Capraia is uninhabited, Pianosa is a strict reserve where landing is forbidden, and Cretaccio is a clay rock between the two main islands.
How you get there
In summer hydrofoils and ferries leave Termoli: the hydrofoil takes a little under an hour, the ferry about twice that. You do not take the car and would not need it: on San Domino you move on foot or by shuttle, on San Nicola on foot only. It is worth booking, above all in August and at weekends.
The boat trip round the islands is the thing that makes the journey worthwhile: there are dozens of sea caves, the water is deep and clear, and the whole archipelago is a marine reserve, with areas where you may swim and areas where you may not go.
