Easy on the coast, inland you need a car

The Molise coast is crossed by the Adriatic motorway and the railway, and arriving from that side is no different from arriving in Abruzzo or Puglia. All the rest of the region is reached from there, by driving up a valley, and without your own vehicle it gets complicated.

By car and motorhome

The exit to aim for is Termoli, on the Adriatic motorway: five hours from Bologna, four from Rome going by Pescara or through the Sannio, two and a half from Naples. From the exit the campsites are minutes away.

For the interior you take the SS647, the Bifernina, which follows the floor of the Biferno valley from Termoli to Campobasso: a two-lane trunk road with no steep gradients, fine even with a long vehicle. From the west you come in at Venafro on the SS85, from the Sannio on the SS87. The roads between one village and the next are narrow and winding: it is better to follow the valley floors even when the map suggests a short cut.

For motorhomes the region is only partly convenient: on the coast there are service areas and equipped campsites, while in the inland villages space is tight and the streets of the old centres cannot be driven. It is best to leave the vehicle in the car parks below the villages, which nearly always exist, and walk up.

By train

The Adriatic line stops at Termoli, Campomarino and Petacciato, and from some stations the campsites are within walking distance. Inland there are the Termoli to Campobasso and Campobasso to Isernia lines, with few services a day and long journey times: they suit someone in no hurry, not someone with a day trip planned.

By plane

Molise has no airport. The two nearest are Pescara, an hour from Termoli, and Naples, an hour and a half from Isernia; Bari is two and a half hours away. Hire the car at the airport, because on the spot the agencies are few.
